First we need to understand sewing vocabulary. Here are the most commonly used sewing-related words and their meanings.

Seam allowance - the area between the stitch and the edge of the fabric. Fabric grain - the direction the threads go to make up the fabric Bias - diagonal across the grain line of the fabric Bias tape - fabric, which has been cut on the bias, used for binding raw edges. Preshrinking - washing new fabric before use to remove sizing. Notch - small cut in the seam allowance for easier curves to be made in fabric Backstitch - the method stitching half a stitch back over what you have previously done in order to secure the stitch. Pressing - the action of ironing open a seam; or ironing flat a hemline Pleating - fabric folded on top of itself to form an accordion look in fabric. Often used in skirt waists.
